The only constant in life is change. Lola Mitchell, also known as "Gangsta Boo", knows this better than anyone. At this point in her life, change is a reality. Change is comforting. And change is strength. "I've been up under other people for way too long," says Boo. "Right now, I'm making sure I have a good situation for myself. I'm not trying to be in the background anymore." The former first lady of Memphis' Hypnotize Crew, (featuring DJ Paul, Juicy and Project Pat), is stepping out in a big way. After establishing herself as one of hip hop's premiere female lyricists, the feisty rapper with the unmistakable flow is ready to take the world by storm on her own. In the late 90's Boo won over millions of fans with her brand of in your face sexuality and no-nonsense hardcore sensibilities. As a member of Three Six Mafia, she contributed sizzling verses to critically acclaimed albums like Tear Da Club Up and Chapter 2: World Domination. On her debut solo album, 1998's Enquiring Minds, she spit wickedly on the politics of money, sex, and relationships--making her an instant favorite throughout the south, and eventually attaining a strong following nationwide. On her latest album, Enquiring Minds Part Two-The Soap Opera, Boo continues to bring the heat for everyone who loves hardcore underground hip hip. From the intro, Lady Gangsta Boo introduces herself as "the hardest in the game". And from the beginning to the end, this album proves that she is as hard as they come. Boo wants her fans to know that everything they've expected from her in the past is still there-- plus more. "My music is along the same lines as before. The only difference is that it's just me. And I have so much more to talk about, cause I've been through so much more." This time around Boo is dealing with the world on her own terms. "I am going to be myself...I don't feel pressured to sell my soul." Boo wants poeple to know that she is a spiritual person who does not like negative energy around her. She meditates. She does yoga. She does things to make herself mentally healthy. "When I love, I love. And when I don't, I don't. That's what I've learned about myself since my last album-- I have to do what works for me. When I concentrate on me, everything else falls into place. Sometimes that means making changes." For Lola Mitchell and Lady Gangsta Boo, change is good. |
